South Africans have experienced a significant increase in the transportation of goods on our road network.
South Africans have experienced a significant increase in the transportation of goods on our road network. All stakeholders in the road logistics value chain are aware of the problems concerning road logistics that affect their industries. The road infrastructure is deteriorating rapidly due to overloading & poor maintenance. Furthermore, the large number of accidents attributed to heavy trucks is unacceptable. Both road safety & road infrastructure are public concerns subject to strict regulation by governments, particularly when abused.
RTMS is an industry–led, government-supported, voluntary, self-regulation scheme that encourages consignees, consignors & road transport operators to implement a management system that demonstrates compliance with Road Traffic Regulations and contributes to preserving road infrastructure, improving road safety & increasing productivity.
Heymans Kole has fulfilled the requirements of the RTMS Registration including:
a. SANS 1395-1:2014 Certification by a SANAS-accredited RTMS certification body.
b. Compliance with the RTMS NPC Registration
Performance Based Standards (PBS)
Performance Based Standards (PBS)
The Smart Truck Pilot Project – PBS vehicles remain part of the Smart Truck Pilot Project and by law are required to be part of the RTMS (Road Transport Management System). RTMS requires regulatory compliance over and above those rules set by the Department of Transport.
The positive outcome of this process will be that PBS vehicles (Link to road Train article) not only reduce the total number of trucks on the road, but will replace them with safer, better operated and more strictly-regulated options.
Heymans Kole has fulfilled the requirements of the PBS/Smart Truck Registration

We do this to optimize our payload & still be within the legal framework relating to mass distributions & the National Road Traffic Act.
PBS VEHICLES (PERFORMANCE BASED STANDARDS)
The Performance Based Standards (PBS) scheme is paving the way for improving heavy vehicle standards & regulations. In South Africa this concept, as a pilot project, has been in operation since 2007. There are currently 165 PBS vehicles being operated within the timber, mining, fuel, cattle & beer industries.
The concept for PBS vehicle is operating very well in Australia & this has formed the basis for the scheme that South Africa is following.
Environmental & Carbon Footprint
Environmental & Carbon Footprint
With global warming & climate change becoming more & more evident due to carbon emissions, every individual worldwide or collective movement’s endeavours to reduce & eliminate carbon emissions can produce great lasting results. We all have an irrefutable responsibility to act & protect our planet for future generations to come: individuals, businesses, government & all who calls this great planet of ours home. According to the WWF 13% of South Africa’s carbon emission comes from the transport industry.
- Water used for all our wash bays are recycled & re-used to contribute positively to water conservation.
- Drivers are not allowed to litter along the road & it is their responsibility to ensure they always have trash bags in the truck. These bags can be emptied when they arrive at a stop where there is a dustbin or when they enter the Heymans Kole yard with designated section for garbage placement & disposal.
- Used oil is handle & disposed of responsibly by sending the oil to a recycling company for safe disposal. Office personnel are encouraged to recycle paper by printing on both sides for internal documents, considering the necessity of printing e-mails as well as copying multiple pages as double sided output.
Our company has strict control measures over diesel consumption & continuous driver training & incentives in place to promote better diesel consumptions. With the acquisition of new trucks the CO2 emissions of each manufacturer are taken into the decision process.
Heymans Kole Group supports environmental initiatives & endeavours to make a positive change in the world we all life in.
Our driver code of conduct makes provision for the following to contribute with preventative action:

Workshops
We have our own workshops, situated in Standerton, Polokwane & Hectorspruit, which are approved by all major truck & trailer manufacturers such as Volvo & Scania. We have agreements in place with Volvo & Scania located nationwide. All services are done in accordance to OEM requirements.
The vehicles are inspected once a week by highly trained & competent personnel who are on standby 24/7. Should a technical breakdown occur, road change will take place to ensure delivery still happens on time, every time!
Breakdown Response
If a breakdown occurs the driver must immediately inform the control room. The control room will inform the technical manager where he will establish the nature of the breakdown & despatch a breakdown vehicle nearest to the broken-down vehicle for immediate assistance.
From the time the breakdown was reported initially until the time the mechanic arrives at the scene will be less than 3 hours.
24/7 Mechanical Standby
Heymans Kole Logistics employs 10 full time mechanics with over 100 years’ experience collectively. All our mechanics have the necessary technical know-how and experience. Due to our fleet being under warranty we have mechanical & technical assistance from Volvo & Scania located in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.
All our mechanics are on standby 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Heymans Kole participated in & contributed towards the Trucking for Rhino’s initiative, raising much needed funds for the conservation & saving of our endangered rhinos. In the first half of 2016, trucks were made available to transport animal feed to drought stricken communities in the North West Province at no expense. This drive was driven by Jacaranda FM.
Management at Heymans Kole knows the importance of developing the youth of the country so that they are equipped to make the most of the opportunities that come their way. Our company hosts an annual golf day of which the proceeds are donated to a local school.
Supplier Development
In recent years, many South African companies have been requested to implement supplier development initiatives that are often associated with BEE compliance.
Though supplier development & BEE are interlinked, the benefits that the implementing company, the supplier & the economy at large achieve with proper supplier development initiatives reaches far beyond a simple BEE scorecard.
Looking at a global market, conducting “business as usual” is no longer enough in providing solutions to unemployment, rectifying the inequalities of the past, development, technological advances & on time delivery.
